What is Foundations? Can I take Foundations classes out of order?
Foundations is a one year program all incoming art and design freshman participate in. The program consists of four mandatory classes, Intro to Drawing I, Intro to Drawing II, Intro to Design I, and Intro to Design II. Intro to Drawing I must be taken before Intro to Drawing II and Intro to Design I must be taken before Intro to Design II.
If I am not admitted to Foundations because classes are "full" what exactly does that mean and can I reapply or change schools for the next available semester?
Fine Arts has a limited number of classroom space available for these classes. We call them "full" once we admit a certain number of students. The number of students admitted often exceeds the number of seats available because based on our past records we know that a certain number of admitted students will choose not to attend KU for various reasons.
If you are not admitted to the school of Fine Arts because Foundations Classes are full you have the option of applying for admission to the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and attempting to transfer to the School of Fine Arts the next semester, but Foundations classes are always competitively sought after by students and fill quickly. Often times, waiting a semester will result in students spending more years at college than normally necessary to complete the degree program.
