Martin Bergee Professor of Music Education & Music Therapy and Director of Music Education, Music Education Advisor
Martin J. Bergee, Director of Music Education and Professor of Music Education and Music Therapy at the University of Kansas, has recently begun his KU appointment after 20 years as a faculty member in music education at the University of Missouri–Columbia. Prior to joining the faculty at MU–Columbia, Bergee taught high school and middle school band in St. Joseph, Missouri. He has taught undergraduate courses in secondary and elementary music methods, instrumental music methods, instrumental conducting and rehearsal techniques, low brass techniques, basic music skills, and introduction to music education. At the graduate level, his course responsibilities have included historical and philosophical foundations of music education, psychology of music, research and measurement techniques, doctoral-level seminars, administration and leadership in music education, advanced pedagogical techniques, and teaching and research internships. Bergee has served on the editorial committees of the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Bulletin of the Council for Research in Music Education. He is the immediate past chair of the Executive Committee of the Music Education Research Council, the governing body of MENC’s Society for Research in Music Education. His research interests include music performance assessment.
