Ji Hye Jung Assistant Professor of Percussion
Ji Hye Jung is assistant professor of percussion at the University of Kansas. Born in Korea, Ms. Jung began concertizing at the remarkable age of nine. Before relocating to the United States in 2004, she performed over 100 concerts as
a soloist with every major orchestra in her native Korea. She again took the concert world by storm with two consecutive First Prizes at the 2006 Linz International Marimba Competition and the 2007 Yale Gordon Concerto Competition in Baltimore.
Ms. Jung frequently performs with many of today's most important conductors and instrumentalists. In 2006 she was a soloist with David Robertson conducting an all Messiaen program in New York's Zankel Hall. Shortly after, Ms. Jung made her debut with the Houston Symphony under the direction of its Music Director Hans Graff, in Peter Klatzow's Concerto for Marimba. Recently she has presented solo recitals and masterclasses at the Schlewig-Holstein Festival in Germany, the Grachtenfestival in Holland, the Seoul Arts Center, The Beijing Central Conservatory and at universities throughout the United States. She previously served on the faculty of Cleveland State University.
With the percussion repertoire still in its formative state, Ms. Jung feels strongly about collaborations with composers to further the creation of a new voice for the art form. She has commissioned pieces from Alejandro Vinao, Paul Lansky and Lucas Ligeti and will return to Seoul in 2010 for premieres of pieces by a consortium of young Korean composers. In September 2009, she will be heard in concerts with the Camerata Pacifica in Santa Barbara, Thousand Oaks and Los Angeles. A number of master class/recital engagements at universities are scheduled around the United States including her first visit to Baylor University in February of 2010 and a series of master classes at the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University.
Ji Hye Jung completed her Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music and a Bachelor's degree at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, both under the tutelage of Prof. Robert van Sice.
