Laurence Rice Lecturer of Double Bass & String Education

Larry Rice, double bass, joined the University of Kansas music faculty in 1998 after 24 years as a member of the Utah Symphony Orchestra. He was assistant principal bass from 1978 to 1998.  He also played for many years with Utah Opera and Ballet West.  Mr. Rice performed on many international, national and regional concert tours and numerous Utah Symphony recordings with music directors Maurice Abravanel, Varujan Kojian and Joseph Silverstein.  He has served on the University of Utah music faculty and is currently on the faculty of the KU Midwestern Music Camp.

Rice has performed with the Kansas City Symphony and San Diego Symphony and is a member of the Lawrence Chamber Orchestra. Chamber music activities include KU faculty recitals as well as performances with the Summerfest Chamber Music Festival in Kansas City.

Mr. Rice received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music from UCLA and a Master of Music degree in double bass performance from the University of Utah. He attended the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, California, for three seasons.  His principal teachers included Peter Mercurio and Robert Stone.
