School of Music Mission

The School of Music at the University of Kansas seeks to nurture and advance the art of music through creation, performance, scholarly inquiry, entrepreneurship and enhancement of the artistic skills and experiences of the University and regional cultural communities. Nurturing and advancement occur via outstanding teaching, mentorship, quality research and creative endeavors and service to professional and lay constituencies. The University of Kansas is a charter member of the National Association of Schools of Music (1928) and is the only institution authorized by the Kansas Board of Regents to grant doctoral degrees in music.

Research and Creative Activity

As part of the state's major research educational institution, School of Music faculty create and disseminate knowledge of music by presenting public performances, seeking new knowledge through research, synthesizing knowledge of music, creating new artistic works, and making artistic resources available to a wide and diverse population.

Service

School of Music faculty plan and implement service activities in the school and the overall University. In addition, they serve in a variety of capacities in professional and service organizations. Our collaborative relationship with personnel and programs in area schools, performing venues, and music therapy clinical facilities is essential to serving the larger community and providing students with opportunities to use their emerging talents.
