Maria Velasco was born and raised in Madrid, Spain. She received her undergraduate degree in painting from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid in 1989, and her M.F.A. in New Forms from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1991. In the fall of 1995, she began her appointment as Assistant Professor of Art at the University of Kansas.
Maria’s work addresses issues surrounding the formation of individual and collective identities, and their inseparable relationship to female sexuality and language. As an on-going project, she is exploring the history of women and her own experience as a woman of Spanish heritage. Her current work consists of multiple media installations and discrete objects.
Maria actively exhibits her work both nationally and internationally, in university and private museums, and in contemporary art venues such as: The Soap Factory in Minneapolis; the Contemporary Arts Forum in Santa Barbara, Calif.; the ARC Gallery in Chicago; the Paula Cooper Gallery in New York; and the Museum of Contemporary Art - Museo Del Barro in Asuncion, Paraguay.
Her work includes a wide range of media and materials and has been acquired by various private collectors and museums. She has received several awards and grants and was the first student in art to obtain a grant through the Madrid-California Education Abroad program.
