The Department of Art is divided into the areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, performance, mixed media and installation. The faculty is diverse and committed to professional studio activity. The Department of Art has received several international residency grants and continues to organize ambitious visiting artist programs.

Special Topic courses in studio art, which reflect a particular focus or interest of the faculty member teaching the class, are offered in addition to the regular curriculum. Courses such as Print-Assisted Imagery, Computer Art, Head and Hands, Painting Process as Ritual, and Iron Casting give students an in-depth investigation into a special point of view.

The department offers a 124-credit hour Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, as well as a 60-credit hour Master of Fine Arts degree. The undergraduate program includes a Professional Activities Seminar that helps prepare seniors for gallery representation, graduate school application and alternative career opportunities. The Art History component of the B.F.A. encourages an awareness of 20th century art and nonWestern culture, along with the Western surveys. The graduate program includes a seminar that not only provides a forum for peer review and critique, but also assists students in preparing for public presentations of their work, Fulbright fellowship application and the development of a professional artist statement.

The Department of Art offers a B.F.A. and M.F.A. in Expanded Media, Painting/Drawing, Printmaking, and Sculpture. Students can also earn a B.A. in Art or a B.F.A. in Art History.

If you are looking for Ceramics, Metalsmithing and Jewelry, or Textile Design, the Department of Design offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in these areas.

Enrollment

Approximately 800-850 undergraduate majors are enrolled in the Departments of Art and Design. Some 225 are in the freshman class, while 150 are upper-level art majors and 450 are design majors. Art, Design and Art History are separate programs with separate majors, but students take classes in each area. Students from other disciplines may take classes through special permission of the department as space allows. Average class size is 18 students. Classes meet for longer time periods than do general educational courses due to the nature of studio work.

Scholarships

There are three types of art scholarships. Incoming freshmen may apply for the Creative and Performing Arts (CPA) Scholarship. Students near completion of Foundations may be nominated for scholarships by faculty. Faculty also nominate students for the Art Department Scholarship Program. Graduate students who have completed one semester of study also are eligible for scholarships and may apply for Graduate Teaching Assistantships.
