Teaching Philosophy

When I teach I give honest criticism and nurture knowledge. My classroom instruction includes three fundamental criteria. The first is lecture-based discussions, in which I emphasize art historical references. I also integrate into my discussions the concepts of theorists and their role for the studio artist. The second tactic of my instruction is demonstrating and experimenting with the techniques of making art. The third aspect is encouraging students to develop technique and content simultaneously and to appraise the discipline required to be an artist. I view each class as having its own personality and I will shift my lectures and topics to fit the needs of the students. I present theoretical topics and technical information as a gift of choice. The art world is a diverse and expanding arena and it is my passion to remain current with the changes and advances. Equally I embrace the longstanding traditions of artmaking and what these techniques and approaches mean historically and how they relate to contemporary practices. In drawing I teach fundamentals and encourage the development of content. Practicing many observational techniques builds an artists confidence in the medium and makes possible the exploration of divergent and other substantive practices in art. In beginning drawing courses I teach a wide array of traditional approaches and more experimental techniques. Advanced courses are thematic and conceptually based while embracing the individual needs of the students. My printmaking background has helped me to navigate the complex relationship of content and technology required in teaching digital media. Through expanding traditional media to include new media a foundation can emerge to support multidisciplinary work and foster experimental approaches. Hybrid possibilities between digital media and traditional practices are encouraged as well as emersion into new technologies. I believe strongly in the crossover of ideas, disciplines and media within a program and at the individual needs of the student.
