Denise L. Stone, Associate Professor of Visual Art Education, serves as the Division Director for Graduate Studies in Visual Art Education. She earned a B.F.A. from Southeastern Massachusetts University, M.Ed. from The Pennsylvania State University, and Ph.D. from The Florida State University. Stone came to the University of Kansas as an assistant professor in 1988. Before joining KU, Stone was an adjunct lecturer and teaching assistant at The Florida State University, and a teaching assistant at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana.
Stone has over 10 years of public and private school teaching experience at both the elementary and secondary levels in Massachusetts, Florida, and Pennsylvania. As an instructor at the University of Kansas, she teaches both undergraduate and graduate students. She has taught courses in The History of Art Education, Curriculum in Art Education, Research Methods in Art Education, Technical Colloquium: Art Museums and Schools, and Art and Design in Daily Life.
Denise's research includes art museum education in relationship to school art education instruction. Her work focuses on how art and museum educators work collaboratively for the provision of meaningful learning and understanding about museum collections. Most recently, she explored children's personal collections and their potential use for developing students' awareness of and appreciation for the art museum and its role as a cultural institution.
She currently serves on the editorial board of Visual Arts Research. Her publications can be found in Studies in Art Education, Visual Arts Research, The Journal of Aesthetic Education, The Journal of Museum Education, Curator, and Activities, Adaptation, and Aging . Her book, Using the Art Museum, was published in 2001 by Davis Publications.
