Phyllis Brill Munczek, associate professor of voice, has been a member of the voice faculty at the University of Kansas since 1969, chairwoman of the department of music performance from 1978-1982, and director of the voice division from 1990 until January 1998. She holds a bachelor of music degree in voice from the Oberlin College-Conservatory of Music, and a master of music degree in voice from the University of Illinois. She has also studied at the Eastman School of Music, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria, at the Tanglewood and Aspen Music Schools, and in New York City. Ms. Brill Munczek has studied with several well-known teachers, including Anna Kaskas, Helen Hodam, Ellen Repp, Grace Wilson, Martha Longmire, Eleanor Steber, Metropolitan Opera Artist, and John Wustman. In 1964 she participated in a 2-month concert tour of the Soviet Union as a violinist and member of the Oberlin College Choir under the direction of Robert Fountain. She has sung with the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, Seiji Ozawa and William Steinberg conducting, and has performed roles with the Rochester Civic Opera, Oberlin Conservatory and University of Illinois Operas and the Chautauqua Opera Company. She has been soprano soloist in several major oratorio and choral works, including Beethoven's 9th Symphony with the Kansas City Philharmonic, Robert Shaw conducting, the Mozart Requiem with baritone William Warfield, and many regional performances of Haydn's "Creation;" "Brahms German Requiem;" Orff's "Carmina Burana;" Mozart's "Requiem;" the "Poulenc Gloria;" Vaughan Williams' "Dona Nobis Pacem;" Samuel Barber's "The Lovers;" Bruckner's "Te Deum Laudamus;" Stravinsky's "Les Noces;" and many others. She has performed over 100 solo and chamber music recitals.
Ms. Brill Munczek has done research and study of the Alexander Technique, vocal pedagogy and the "Care of the Professional Voice", 19th and 20th century French vocal literature, the vocal literature of Israeli composers and Ladino/Sephardic song literature. Several of her former students have gone on to sing throughout the United States and Europe in opera, musical theater, chamber and choral music, as well as hold teaching positions at several universities and colleges.
Ms. Brill Munczek has served as an adjudicator for the Metropolitan Opera district auditions; Kansas Music Teachers Association; Missouri and Kansas All-State Festivals; the Texas Interscholastic League; National Association of Teachers of Singing district and regional competitions; and the NATSAA Singer of the Year National Competition. She is a member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and Pi Kappa Lambda.
