To be considered for University Fellowships and have priority consideration for Graduate Teaching Assistantships, your application materials must arrive by December 15 for admission to the following fall semester.
Graduate students have several opportunities for financial assistance in all areas of music study at the University of Kansas. Before you can be considered for any of these opportunities, however, you must be admitted to the University and the program that you intend to pursue. The School of Fine Arts offers a variety of scholarships. Students must contact their department for information about eligibility and application procedures.
The Graduate School awards many types of Fellowships, Scholarships, and Teaching Assistantships. A complete list of the programs and their descriptions can be found at: www.ku.edu/~graduate
All awards are made on a competitive basis. Applications and the relevant materials must be received by December 15 to be considered for the Graduate School awards.
The Department of Music and Dance awards graduate teaching assistantships in accompanying, ensembles, music education, music therapy, musicology, music theory and composition, and in many areas of performance. On occasion, graduate research assistantships are available in music education and music therapy.
Award amounts generally range from $2,500 to $7,500 and carry with them tuition waivers ranging from 25% to 100%, depending upon the percentage of the appointment. The Department makes about 50 appointments each year. They are renewable upon mutual agreement for up to two years for master's work, three years for doctoral work, or five years combined. The deadline for priority consideration for these awards is December 15.
The Department employs many students annually to work as accompanists, stage managers, ensemble librarians, classroom assistants, laboratory monitors, office assistants, librarians, recital monitors and stage crew. Similar positions often are available in the School of Fine Arts, with the Concert, Chamber Music and New Directions Series, and other related offices on campus. These positions are generally filled after students have enrolled.
