Alumni

The University of Kansas has graduated many piano students whose career aspirations have led them to musical success in professional, business, and academic venues. The list below represents a small portion of those graduates who have continued to contribute to the ongoing legacy of the KU Piano Division.


  Dennis Alexander, B.M. 1969, M.M. 1970, has earned an international reputation as one of North America's most prolific and popular composers of educational piano music for students at all levels.
 
Tao (Felix) Chang, M.M. 1998, D.M.A. in-progress, is the 1997 Grand Prize Winner of the XII Vianna da Motta International Competition. Mr. Chang's performance of "Noctuelles" by Maurice Ravel was recorded live at the Lied Center, September 1998. VMF label.

  Stewart Gordon, B.A. 1953, M.A. 1954, is professor and chair of keyboard studies at the University of Southern California.
 
Jeongwon Ham, D.M.A. 1999, is Assistant Professor of Piano at the University of Oklahoma, Norman.  
  Sylvia Reynolds Henry, D.M.A. 1979, is Associate Professor of Piano at the Ohio University School of Music, Athens.

Matthew R. Hill, M.M. 1989, is Assistant Professor of Piano at Goshen College in Indiana where he teaches applied piano and piano pedagogy.  

  Amir Khosrowpour, B.M. 2003, was the 2002 national collegiate winner of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) artist competition.
Alexandra Mascolo-David, M.M. 1990, D.M.A. 1997, is Associate Professor of Piano at Central Michigan and the recipient of the CMU 2001 Provost's Award for Outstanding Scholarly and Creative Activity.  
 
  Roger Price, D.M.A. 1984, is Professor of Piano and Composition at the University of Tulsa in Oklahoma.
 
Darci Prilliman, D.M.A. 2002, is Assistant Professor and Director of Piano Studies at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana.  

  Mark Puckett, M.M. 1983, D.M.A. 1986, is Professor of Piano and director of piano studies at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas.
 
Allen Rogers, B.M. 1946, served on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music and Boston University and whose generous gifts to the KU Endowment Association established the Carl A. and Francis H. Preyer Award and the Capps-Rogers Award to provide scholarships for undergraduate and graduate piano majors.  
 
  Scott McBride Smith, M.M. 1976, is President and Chief Executive Officer of the International Institute for Young Musicians and President of the Turtle Rock Conservatory of Music in Irvine, California, USA.
 
Dolores Stevens, B.M. 1952 is director of piano studies at California State University, Dominquez Hills, and serves as Los Angeles governor of the National Association of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS). Ms. Steven's recording of the first movement of "Sonatina" by Mel Powell was recorded in 1989 for the Dominquez Digital label.

  Joe Utterback, D.M.A. 1979, is a jazz pianist, composer, and recording artist who has been a featured performer throughout the United States. Mr. Utterback's recording of "We Will Meet Again" by Bill Evans was recorded in 1999 for the Connoisseur Society label.

David Allen Wehr, B.M. 1977, M.M. 1979, is Associate Professor of Piano and Hillman Distinguished Piano Chair at the Duquesne University Mary Pappert School of Music in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  
 
  Shannon Wettstein, B.M. 1990, is a founding member of Boston's Auros Group for New Music; she joined the faculty of Bemidji State University in Minnesota in September, 2000.
 
Adrienne Wiley, B.M. 1983, M.M. 1984, is Assistant Professor of Piano at Central Michigan University where she administers the piano pedagogy program and teaches class and applied piano.
