Forrest Pierce joined the KU
faculty in 2006 as assistant professor of composition and director
of the New Music Ensemble. A composer and angler of little
blue streams, Pierce has taught on the faculties of Lewis & Clark
College and the University of Texas, and has served as artistic
director of the Friends of Rain contemporary ensemble, and as composer-in-residence
of the Seattle New Music Ensemble. Pierce was a student of
Don Freund, Stephen Paulus and Dominick Argento, and earned degrees
from the University of Puget Sound summa cum laude, the University
of Minnesota, and Indiana University, where he received the dean's
prize in composition.
Forrest Pierce's works are tuneful, rich in triadic harmony and forceful rhythms, and include over one hundred pieces for soloists and ensembles representing orchestral, vocal, choral, and operatic forces. His works have been performed by the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the choir of Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, the Brave New Works Core Ensemble, the Northwest Repertory Singers, the Oregon Repertory Singers, the Indiana University New Music Ensemble, the Seattle New Music Ensemble, and distinguished soloists in North America and abroad.
A native northwesterner, Pierce chases trout across the Idaho Rockies each summer, and plans to teach his son, Aidan, to do the same.
