A Few of Our Graduate Students’ Accomplishments
David Platter, a recent MFA recipient in sculpture, was awarded the 2011 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award by the International Sculpture Center. This year 485 students from over 190 colleges and universities were nominated. David’s work will be on display at the Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, NJ, through April, 2012. Can’t make it to the exhibition? David’s work was featured in the October issue of Sculpture magazine!
Juli Pitzer, a doctoral student in Film and Media Studies, has proven to be an active leader in her department, an excellent scholar-in-the-making, and a rising documentary filmmaker. She won the Charles “Buddy” Rogers Scholarship in 2009, the Women in Film Scholarship in 2010, and the Loren Dolezal Community Service Award in May 2011. Her documentary, The Historic Jayhawk Theatre, has aired at local film festivals and on public television. The film was an outcome of an internship Juli completed sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council. As a result of her work and the documentary, she was selected to present at the 9th Annual Capitol Research Summit, February 2011, in Topeka on historic preservation, her dissertation topic.
When the president of the American Society for Theatre Research opened the annual convention this year in Montreal, Canada, KU Theatre alumna Rhonda Blair, began her address by telling the crowd, “when I was a graduate student at KU....” Also attending the 2011 conference was Jocelyn C. Buckner, Ph.D. 2010, a former scholarship recipient, who is currently a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Pittsburgh.
Since completing her MFA IN 1996, Julie Green’s work has been included in 25 solo exhibitions. An Associate Professor at Oregon State University, divides studio time between narrative painting and the Last Supper, a project illustrating the final meal requests of U. S. death row inmates. This year Julie received the prestigious Joan Mitchell Prize for painting.
