Reasons to Build Professional Relationships with Your Professors

Friday, February 2, 2018

They all say it during the first class of the semester and write it on top of their syllabus, “my office hours are during…” But how much thought do you give your professors’ office hours after that first week? Growing professional relationships with your professors will help you make the most of your college experience and beyond. Visiting with your professor during office hours, taking advantage of the Take Your Professor to Lunch Program or taking a few moments to chat after class can help you in more ways than one:

Find a mentor

Your professors are professors because they want to see students like you succeed. By building a professional relationship with a professor, you have yourself a built-in mentor. Having someone to go to with career questions or general advice will help you feel more prepared for post-grad life.

Future references and networking

At some point, everyone needs a reference. Professors will be excited to be your reference if they have some sense of you as a person outside of your weekly class times. They’re also a great place to start growing your network.

Better understanding of the class

Professors are human. By getting to know the human side of them, not just the academic side, you’ll enjoy the class more and be more open to learn from their life experiences
